OCTOBER 16th IS DAY DRAFTEES REGISTER Plans for the Oct. 16th draft registration are rapi dly being completed. 16,- 464,000 men are expected to be registered on that —between 21 and 36 __|§jl*ss of age—and 403.000 isMne number for North Carolina. 400,000 men will be put into training around Nov. 15th, and of this number about 13,000 will come from North Carolina (less credit for the number who have enlisted or volunteered!. If you are 21 to 35 on Oct. 16th, you must regist er, white and black. The registrars for the Nov. sth election will be on duty for October 12, 19, 26 to register for the election all who are eligible and who did not register last May. And these same regis trars, mostly,- will be used for the Oct. 16th draft re yJnpn h Oil VS of 7 a. m. aiM #p. m. So far the idea is for the regist rars to do this October 16th recording without pay—a patrotic service. - Each man must answer these questions: name and address, phone, age, date of birth, place of birth, name of person who will always know his address, relation ship of that person, em ployer’s name, place of business or employment. Each man will then receive a card showing his regis tration. BLOOD TESTS TO MEN IN DRAFT AGE At a recent meeting of the State Health Depart ment at Raleigh, plans werb formulated to coop erate with Draft Boards by giving blood tests to all those men who register between the ages of 21«<to 35 on registration day Oct. 16th. v This is a Nation wide procedure and it is impor tant that every man report to the Health Department for* his blood test on one of the following pref erably on the first date of October 16th. Schedule of Clinic Days <rt Health Department October 16th from 9 a. m. to 4 p. m. October 23rd from 9 a. m. to 4 p. m. October 30th from 9 a. m. to 4 p. m. Those men who cannot report on these dates should come in on any Sat urday morning between 9 a. m. and 12 N.—(J. J. Cro ley, M. D., District Health Officer). Funeral" services were held at 4:00 o’clock Tues day afternoon at the Win dom church with Rev. E. P. Blevins officiating. Bur ial was at Windom. Surviving are his wodow, four sons, one daughter, four brothers and one sis ter. SCOUT MEETING An important meeting of the Boy Scout Troop has been called for Friday evening at 7:30 at the club house. Not only are all scouts urged to attend, but members of the Men’s Club which is sponsor for the local troop, and parents of the boys are asked to at tend, A new scout master will be named, and plans will be made to attend the fieljd day held for Toe Riv er District Scouts at Spruce Pine on Saturday. NOTICE The McCracken Cemete ry will be cleaned off on Saturday, October 19. All those who are interested are asked to come and help in this work. _ ACCEPTS POSITION IN— FARM OFFICE * Mrs. Ralph Laughrun has accepted the position with the AAA program in the county farm agent’s of fice left vacant by the re cent registration of Fur man Souther. Methodist Church News The last meeting of the Woman’s Missionary Soci eay of the Met hod is t Church South of Higgins Memorial Church was held at the home of Mrs. R. A. Tues day. The child died at Crossnore Sunday after noon ill ness. Rev. J. S. Folger, pastor of the Burnsville Method ist church, ancTß. M. Tom berlin, principal of Burns ville school, conducted the services. Buriafr-was in the Styles family cemetery at Banks Creek.. Pallbearers, were Cecil Anglin, McKinney, Roy. Elizabeth, a member of the seventh grade at Bur nsville school, yas an honor student with an unusually high scholastic I average. LAST RITESFOR MISSi PANSY McCOURRY Miss Pansy McCourry, 53, died at Windom Octob er 3. Funeral services were held- at the Honeycutt cem etery near Windom on Fri day, October 4 at 2:00 p. m. Rev. Holland Black offici ated. Miss McCourry was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Gaston McCqur ry, and made her fugue with her brother, Fred Me- Courry. She was a member of the Windom Baptist church. She is survived by one sister, Mrs. Bessie Edge of Micaville qnd two brothers, Fred of Windom and Lat tie of Pennsylvania. Party Honors Burnsville Faculty Members A party given Friday evening at the high school building honored members of the faculty of Burnsville school. For the occasion the study hall was decorated with a profusion p f late fall flowers. Throughout the evening games and contests were played under the direction of Mrs. Hobart Ray and Mrs. H. G. Fletcher. Later refreshments were served the fifty guests. Dr, W. '' B. Robertson spoke in appreciation of the teachers, and B. M. Tomberlin, principal of the school, responded. A silver offering was taken and will be used to purchase ad ditional equipment for the Home Economics depart ment. Press Atkins of Ramsey town who has been critical ly ill in the Marion hospi tal is improving. BOY SCOUTS PLAN FIELI) DAY EVENT L The Scouts of the Toe ' River District will hold a | big field day event, a Seout-O-Ral, on Saturday ; night, October 12th, at 7:30 * at the ball field in Spruce : Pine. The Scouts will race ■ against time in contest in fire building, signaling, ‘ first aid, dressing, building ■ fre by flint and steel, knot ■ tieing, and flap jack cook ■ ing. All these events are 1 very interesting and. es * pecially the flap jack eook * ing as the Scouts are re quired to flip ’em. I Rev. H. H. Cash, chair , man of the district com , mittee on camping and ac * tivities, F. T. Vance, and , Roy Campbell are the men i that will be in charge of the Scout-O-Ral. COURT OF HONOR The Court of Honor for the Socuts of the Toe River District of the Dan ie 1 1 Boone Council is to be held on Tuesday, October 15th, at 1 :30 a*tW Se'AiUHalHn Micaville, N. C. E. A. Scott of Spruce Pine, chairman of the District Advance ment committee will be in charge of the meeting. Floyd New, Asst. Scout Executive of the Daniel Boone Council will assist with the meeting. Scouts from* all over this district which consist of Yancey, Mitchell and Avery counties will appear for advancement. The pub lic is invited. Following the Court of Honor the district commit tee will meet under the leadership of B. C. Bur gess, district chairman. Emergency Service Corps The Scouts of the Toe River District which con sist of Yancey, Mitchell, and Avery counties, will be organized into Emergency Service Corps. The purpose of these units will toYJ 5 prepare the Scouts so that they can be of service in case of emergency. The Scouts will be trained in First Aid, Life Saving, Swimming, Rescue Meth ods, Knot Tieing, Cooking, Signalling and Pathfind ing. During the past floods the Scouts were very active in helping in any way that they The reason for the new Corps is to have the Scout better organized for such work. Another project that the Scouts of these Districts are starting on is to see that all the schools have American flags and that the flag, is properly dis played. This project goes in with the aim of Scouting to teach Citizen ship. The Scouts will help any school that does not have a flag pole to secure and erect one. YANCEY 4H MEMBERS ARRANGE BOOTH AT STATE FAIR ,The 4H clubs of Yancey county arranged a club booth at the State Fair which is in progress at Raleigh this week. Assist ant farm agent V. J. Good man tpok the group down Saturday, and those who went were Junior Hunter, representative of the Clearmont club, Louise Yelton of the Bald Creek club and Doris Brown of the Burnsville club. Miss Alley, Mrs. Walter Gibbs and Miss Alice Mc- Peters also went to Raleigh to arrange a Iwoth at the Fair, and will remain there part of this week. “Greater Movie Season” Vacations are over, busi ness is back to normal and thoughts now turn to en tertainment and amuse ment for the fall. Iliff Clevenger, manager of the Yancey Theatre, along with many other managers throughout the South, has arranged for a select group of pictures to be presented for a period of weeks. This series of entertain ment has been desigated “Greater Movie Season,” and this slogan symbolizes the entire efforts of the producers and managers in giving unusual screen en tertainment at this time. TbTY“aH“cey Theatre "hero will present the pictures now acclaimed “hits” while they are still new. “Rebec ca” will be shown Monday and Tuesday, and other outstanding pictures which will be presented here soon include “City For Con quest,” “Lucky Partners,” “Four Sons,” “Maryland,” “The Man I Married,” “An gel From Texas,” “Return of Frank James,” “The Sea Hawk.” BALD CREEK NEWS A. F. Bryson and family have moved from Cane River to the W. B. Wilson home at Bald Creek. Mr. and Mrs. Kirk Wallen and young son\ of Johnson City, and Mrs. Swadly spent Sunday with Mrs. R. C. Burton and family. .. - Mr.! and Mrs. Wess Ed yvards, and Faye Ellen vis ited their daughter Hope, who is in school at Cullo whee Sunday. Mrs. Pearl Greenway who spent the summer at Valley View Tourist Home returned to Miami Beach last week. , ' James Proffitt is back from a business trip to New York. Mrs. Gus Hensley has had a recent visit with her daughter, Mrs. Ike Laugh run of Johnson City. The Society of Christian Service met at thja home of Mrs. Wess Edwards Tues day afternoon. She reports that Ural, her grandson, is some, improved, and also that she is now called great grand-mother. They spent part of the week end in Blowing Rock where Mr. Andrews is teaching. Among those who at tended the Duke-Tennessee football game in Knoxville Saturday were Iliff Clev enger, Troy Ray, Hope and Paul Buck and Mr. and Mrs. Alden P. Honeycutt.
